Vic: Nursing agencies running scare campaign, Thwaites says

Victorian Health Minister JOHN THWAITES says claims that the state's public hospitalswill be plunged into crisis when it stops using agency nurses are a scare campaign.

The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association, which represents 13 nursing agencies, says one third of hospital beds could close.

But Mr THWAITES says nursing agencies are more interested in profits than patientsand just want to make more money out of the public system.

Under a new system which begins on Thursday, public hospitals will only be allowedto use agency nurses in extreme cases.

Instead they will call on pools of nurses employed directly by the government to beused where they're needed.
