Fed: One Sydney Airport has enough competition - SACL head
CANBERRA, Aug 1 AAP - Restricting Sydney to one major airport instead of two was notanti-competitive, Sydney Airport chief executive Max Moore-Wilton said today.
The airport was competing widely against other Australian and regional airports, he said.
Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) today released for public comment a draftmaster plan for the next 20 years of airport development.
"Anti-competitive! We're in competition with airports all over Australia (and) otherparts of the world," Mr Moore-Wilton told reporters.
"You can't have Sydney's largest piece of infrastructure, which is what Sydney Airportis, and just simply say let's have two of them.
"What a complete and utter waste of money if one can do it as well.
"We have a regulatory environment, which is mandated by government. We're probablythe most regulated business in the Sydney basin."
He said more flight paths were not part of the plan and there were no proposals forchange to restrictions on freight or passenger aircraft.
The draft plan forecasts a tripling of passenger numbers to 68.3 million by 2023/24,when there will be about 412,000 aircraft movements each year.
The domestic and international passenger terminals would be extended while air freightfacilities would be relocated to land north of the airport.
Mr Moore-Wilton said the SACL was working within the current regulatory framework setby Air Services Australia and the federal government.
"We are quite content in the master plan to continue to work within that environment."
