QLD:Rural GPs worried about new hospitals deal

Rural GPs are worried a new national agreement on hospitals funding won't improve services
in the bush.

Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD has struck a deal with the states and territories to set
up a new pool of state and federal money to fund hospitals from 2012.

The Rural Doctors Association of Queensland has been pushing for a set of minimum standards
to ensure adequate services in country areas .. and also wants new measures to improve
recruitment and retention of staff.

But RDAQ president Dr DAN HALLIDAY has told the ABC neither of those issues have been addressed.

Dr HALLIDAY says the new deal seems watered down and there's still the potential for
the blame game to continue.

Fed: Abbott plays down climate comments

BRISBANE, Dec 9 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has played down comments
he made on global warming this week, denying he said it was no longer an issue.

The federal government and the Australian Greens have slammed Mr Abbott after he said
that while the earth was "pretty warm" by historical standards, there had been no appreciable
warming since the late 1990s and that had now ceased.

On Wednesday, Mr Abbott defended his comments.

"I don't believe that I've ever said that (global warming is no longer an issue),"

he told reporters in Brisbane.

"Certainly I think that the environment is always an issue. It should always be an issue."

Mr Abbott said there was "a lot of argument" over the science but added: "I think that
climate change is real."

He said action needed to be taken against climate change, but not action that financially
hurt the country and did not effectively address the environment.

Bus-Tech Unveils Mainframe Data Library model 100S for SMBs
Type: News

Bus-Tech, a supplier of data center connectivity products, announced the introduction of the Mainframe Data Library (MDL) model 100S.

Designed to provide mainframe Virtual Tape Library (VTL) functionality to smaller mainframe shops, the MDL-100S boasts self- contained storage and multiple data protection options which provide a turn-key solution for mainframe tape replacement.
The MDL-100S is offered with 4.5 TB of usable RAID protected disk storage and additional data protection features. Bus-Tech's Virtuent Replicator provides scheduled or mainframe-initiated asynchronous replication to secondary and tertiary sites via Internet Protocol while Virtuent Tape Backup gives users the option to backup the internal disks to IBM LTO-4 tape autoloader.

The MDL-100S is built on the technology of the MDL product family and the Virtuent software engine. Assuming a 2.5-to-1 compression ratio, the MDL-100S presents over 11 TB of storage for tape data. This is the equivalent of over 5,500 fully-utilized 3490E cartridges.

"The tape processing requirements of smaller mainframe customers have received little attention from leading vendors," said Bus-Tech President, Al Brandt. "With the introduction of the MDL-100S and the previously announced MDL-100V, Bus-Tech is providing the latest mainframe VTL innovations on a scale and price that is attractive to small mainframe environments. Bus-Tech continues to enable mainframe customers of all sizes to access the benefits of leading edge technology from the distributed systems storage market."

The MDL is a modular, scalable family of VTL controllers for IBM, IBM compatible and Fujitsu mainframes. An MDL solution provides enterprise data centers with lower tape processing costs, improved end-user service levels and disaster recovery alternatives for the mainframe environment. The MDL uses distributed system disk storage to store and retrieve tape data. The result is a solution that incorporates the advantages of distributed system storage and networking technologies into the mainframe data center.

Qld: Cropduster's inexperience may have caused crash, says ATSB

BRISBANE, April 26 AAP - A lack of experience in night flying contributed to the death
of a crop duster pilot in western Queensland, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB)
says.

A 44-year-old pilot, from Bourke in NSW, was found dead in the cockpit of an Air Tractor
AT-802A aircraft after it went down at 8.35pm (AEST) on January 6, 2005, on Wynella Station,
a remote cotton property south of Dirranbandi near the NSW border.

It burst into flames on impact and the pilot was found still strapped in his seat in
the burning aircraft.

In a report released today, the ATSB said the pilot, who had not sprayed the property
before, told support staff on the ground shortly before his fatal flight that he was anxious
about the lack of horizon due to the dark conditions on a cloudy and moonless night.

The investigation into the crash showed the aircraft was capable of normal operation
at the time but even though the pilot had substantial flying and agricultural flying experience,
he had only recently completed night agricultural flight training.

A post-mortem examination also revealed he had suffered from severe coronary heart disease.

The ATSB report said the aircraft had hit level ground in a wings-level position.

But the bureau came to no definitive conclusions, citing the lack of recorded and witness
information and the destruction of the cockpit in the fire.

"However, the combination of pilot inexperience in night agricultural operations and
the dark night conditions increased the risk of an accident," the ATSB said.

Fed: Service marks Vietnam Vets' Day

CANBERRA, Aug 18 AAP - Vietnam war veterans have been honoured at a memorial service
in Canberra attended by hundreds of survivors of Australia's longest military engagement.

The Vietnam Veterans' Day service also marks the 40th anniversary of the battle of
Long Tan, Australia's bloodiest confrontation in the decade-long war, in which 18 diggers
were killed and 24 wounded.

Prime Minister John Howard paid tribute to the veterans, drawing parallels between
Long Tan and the western front battle of Fromelles 90 years ago which claimed 5,500 Australian
casualties.

"They are bound together in the history of this country and in the consciousness of
who we are by the common characteristics of Australians that were on display at those
two battles: those characteristics of courage, of initiative, of individual fortitude
and of mateship," Mr Howard told the service.

He also recognised the psychological strain suffered by many Vietnam veterans following
what was an unpopular war.

"We're very conscious of the lingering impact of that psychological strain," Mr Howard said.

NSW: Seven program defamed radio host Sandilands: jury

NSW: Seven program defamed radio host Sandilands: jury

By Amy Fallon

SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - A Seven Network expose on the manipulation of Australia's music
charts defamed radio host Kyle Sandilands by suggesting he dishonestly plugged his girlfriend's
music, a jury has found.

Sandilands, who co-hosts the morning breakfast show on Sydney's 2Day FM and was a judge
on the Ten Network's 2005 Australian Idol series, is claiming damages, interest and costs
over the Today Tonight promotional material and investigation.

The promotional material ran over a four-day period from July 29, 2005 while the investigation
itself aired on August 1.

Sandilands warned Seven he would take legal action if the investigation went to air.

A four-member NSW Supreme Court jury today took just under an hour to decide that Sandilands
had been defamed by imputations conveyed in the Today Tonight segment.

These were the suggestions that Sandilands had "engaged in rorts" in the industry,
and by "promoting" the music of his girlfriend, singer Tamara Jaber, had behaved "dishonestly".

The all-male jury also found that Sandilands had been defamed by the imputation that
he was a "liar" because he had falsely denied that he had input into the play list of
the Austereo Network's radio stations.

During the one-day hearing, Sandilands's counsel, Bruce McClintock SC, told the jury
the segment was an "expose" into the "rorts and wheeling and dealing" in the billion-dollar
Australian music industry, focusing on how DJs and managers "cook the charts".

The jury was twice shown a video of Seven's investigation that branded Sandilands as
"the Idol host and radio DJ who plays and promotes his live-in girlfriend".

Seven, in its broadcast, claimed Jaber's debut single, Ooh Aah, had been labelled a
"stinker" by some radio networks but had been played repeatedly on Austereo Network stations,
including 2Day FM.

"The whole flavour of this program is about dishonesty," Mr McClintock told the court.

But counsel for Seven, Tom Hughes QC, accused Mr McClintock of taking the jury on a
"journey into fantasy land".

"The ordinary reasonable viewer does not rush to judgment," Mr Hughes said.

He said the ordinary reasonable viewer would be subject to "conversational interruptions"

while watching the program, which could diminish their capacity to "pick up nuances of
meaning".

Seven will now have a chance to argue its defences in the case.

If the network is unsuccessful, a judge will decide whether Sandilands receives damages.

Sandilands was present for today's hearing, but left before the verdict was reached.

A spokesman for the Austereo Network said he could not comment on the matter.
