NSW: King of Country to get heritage centre on mid-north coast

The New South Wales government says a SLIM DUSTY Heritage Centre on the state's mid-northcoast will be a tourist mecca for the region and an appropriate tribute to the King ofCountry Music.

Minister for Regional Development HARRY WOODS today visited the preferred site forthe proposed heritage centre at the Kempsey Showground.

In June this year, Premier BOB CARR announced the government would provide financialassistance towards the development of a business plan for the centre.

Mr WOODS says the King of Country and Kempsey hometown hero deserves the recognitionafter 60 years in the industry, 103 albums and more Golden Guitars than any other artist.

Project manager of the Slim Dusty Heritage Centre KATHRYN YARNOLD says the aim is tomake the centre a reality by 2004.

The project includes a museum of SLIM DUSTY memorabilia, retail and dining facilities,an entertainment venue to host some of Australia's best country music talent and a state-of-the-artrecording studio.
