Qld: Welford introduces new tree clearing amendments

The Beattie government has introduced long-awaited legislation to amend Queensland's
tree clearing laws.

The move comes eight months after the original regulations were passed through state parliament.

The laws were only part-proclaimed last year to apply to leasehold land as a funding
row emerged between the state and federal governments over compensation for farmers affected
by tree clearing restrictions.

Natural Resources Minister ROD WELFORD has told parliament the changes to the Vegetation
Management Act will remove protection on freehold land for vegetation classed "of concern"

or "vulnerable to extinction".

He says the amended legislation is expected to be passed by state parliament within
three weeks and will pave the way for regional communities to begin a local vegetation
management planning.
